Dear Provost Rice, I am an undergraduate at UMD writing to express my support for the Graduate Labor Union. As an undergrad, I recognize that grads provide invaluable labor for this campus - as researchers and as teachers and mentors for over 30,000 undergrads. It is shocking that a majority of grad workers are housing insecure and a third struggle with buying food, a basic necessity. A university that prides itself on “advancing the public good”, “investing in people and communities”, and which values actions that are "guided not only by what is good for self but also by what is good for all" should be a university that allows graduate workers to have a say in their working conditions - especially since a supermajority of grad workers support unionization. I urge you to support collective bargaining rights for graduate workers and recognize the Graduate Labor Union. Respectfully,
